Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc

Water resource management

The STBMA, manager of the Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc ski area, guarantees optimized and reasoned management of its water resources thanks to:

  • - Efficient monitoring tools,
  • - A significant investment in the modernization of the snowmaking network,
  • - The experience, know-how and knowledge of the specificities of the Saint-Gervais ski area for snow makers.

The experience of the STBMA and its statistical monitoring allow it to establish predefined artificial snow quotas according to weather conditions in order to limit water consumption. Analysis tools allow them to accurately monitor production and enrich their knowledge through experience feedback:

The snow guns work with a water network and a pressurized air network
  • - Continuous monitoring of water consumption by the LIBERTY TECHNOALPIN automated system,
  • - Innovative snowpack management tools (sonars, connected grooming plans, GPS).

The main objective of investing in the snowmaking network is to optimize air and water consumption:

  • - Continuation of the snow gun modernization program to reduce consumption,
  • - Snowmaking using the potential energy of high altitude water supplies.

Finally, by preparing the area as well as possible throughout the season, the STBMA ensures better maintenance of the snowpack and therefore a reduction in the need for water: :

  • Wind barriers to store snow,
  • Preparation and maintenance of slopes during the off-season ,
  • Improvement of ski runs by drainage, earthworks, mowing, etc.
  • Revagetation of the soil

The high altitude lake of Joux is a fine illustration of an eco-responsible ski area project, carried out in close collaboration with the municipality and its farmers. You can find all the details of this project on our site: Lake of Joux
